Clarence A. Hanel, 89, of Cameron, died Sunday, February 16, 2014, in a Cameron nursing center. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, at St. Monica's Catholic Church with Rev. Dimitrij Colankin officiating. Burial will follow in St. Monica's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, with a rosary beginning at 7 p.m. at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home. Clarence Andrew was born in Milam County, Texas, to Frank Joseph and Rosina (Kunz) Hanel. A graduate of C. H. Yoe High School, he was also a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Army. He married Mildred Elizabeth Karnowski on January 20, 1951. in St. Monica's Catholic Church. Clarence was owner and operator of Cameron Machine Shop until 1977 and in 1978 he opened Milam Machine. He was a member of St. Monica's Catholic Church where he had served as Lector and song leader. Clarence was a 3rd degree Knight of Columbus. He was preceded in death by brothers: Anton, George, James, and Herman; and by a sister, Rita Greenwood. Survivors include his wife, Mildred Hanel, of Cameron; sons: Frank Joseph Hanel and wife, Mary Jo, of Midland, John Andrew Hanel and wife, Edith, of Dennison, and Albert Lee Hanel and wife, Miss Ruby, of Cameron; daughters, Phyllis Ann Shuffield and husband, Donald, of Cameron, and Mary Elizabeth McDowell and husband, Kim, of Shady Shores; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters: Dosithea "Dottie" Hobizal, of Temple, Anna Marie Jetter, of Elmendorf, Joan Gallup, of Portland, Oregon, Imelda Pechel, of Fort Worth; and many other relatives and numerous friends.
