Bio

William Leyshon was born March 1, 1849, in Wales. His parents were Lewis Leyshon, born April 2, 1813 and Alice Jones born May 2, 1813. He met and married Lettice Davis, his first wife, sometime in June of 1869. Lettice Davis was born Sept. 22, 1853 at Mountain Ash, Glamorgan Wales. Five known children born to them. A daughter, Maryann, was born about 1870 and died shortly thereafter. Their second child, Griffith, a boy, was born June 27, 1871, and lived only one hour and forty-five minutes. They next had a girl named Margaret, born March 2, 1874 also died shortly after birth. Both Griffith and Margaret were born and died in Aberdare Glamorgan, Wales. Their next child, a girl named Alice Ann Ellen, was born in 1872also at Aberdare Glamorgan Wales. She later died Los Angeles County California in 1918 . In 1875 their fifth child, Joseph, was born, in Aberdare Glamorgan Wales. He never married and died in Los Angeles County California in 1951. William's first wife, Lettice, died in Wales 4 August 1876. After immigrating to America, he made the trek to Utah Territory with his two small children and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints. By 1880 he was in Bingham Canyon, near Salt Lake City, working as a coal miner and railroad hand. On 15 June 1881 he married Miss Emily Crofts at Provo, Utah. The settled at what was known as "Winter Quarters", Scofield, Carbon County, Utah. There he worked in the coal mines and by 1900, had eight living children. They would have a total of twelve by 1907, two of them dying young. William had been injured in a mining accident sixteen years before his death, and struggled to care for his large family. He was know to be an upright man of great faith and he and Emily always helped their neighbors. William used herbs to help the sick and Emily was a midwife, therefore they were considered to be doctor and nurse for many townsfolk. It is said that William's two children by his fist wife came to live with them for a time, but daughter Alice eventually married and his son, Joseph joined the navy and was not heard from until William's death. He returned to California, later to be found dead in an alley of Los Angeles. He was cremated there. At Alice's death, her body was returned to Utah to be buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery. After William's death, Emily delivered their last child, a daughter, about eight months later.
