Charles E. Hovenden, 86, of Fremont, NE, formerly of North Bend, NE, died Monday, February 3, 2014, at Shalimar Gardens in Fremont. Charles was born on June 5, 1927, at Pleasant Valley in Dodge County to Charles L. and Olive (Lawshe) Hovenden. He grew up and attended high school at North Bend. He served in the US Army during World War II from December 5, 1945 until July 3, 1947. After the military, he married the love of his life, Evelyn Adamson on January 26, 1948, in West Palm Beach, Florida. They lived in West Palm Beach for three years before moving to the Purple Cane area, near North Bend, NE. Charles farmed for 60 years in the Purple Cane and Webster areas and retired in 2001. Charles was a member of the American Legion #340 of Morse Bluff, NE, Fremont Fraternal Order of Eagles #200, served on the District 55 school board for 3 years, and former member of Purple Cane Methodist Church. Charles is survived by his wife, Evelyn Hovenden of Fremont, NE; daughters, Shirley Kolm of Sandpoint, Idaho, Carol Hovenden of Las Vegas, NV, and Nancy (Bob) Clausen of Fremont, NE; his twin sister, Bonnie Ruzicka of North Bend, NE; four grandchildren, Melissa Rountree, Angie Scott, Braden Pence, and Matt Pence; and 5 great grandchildren. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Jean Henrichson; 3 brothers, Ted, Gordon, and Jack Hovenden; and granddaughter, Lynn Menze. Funeral service will be 10 AM on Friday, February 7, 2014, at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Chaplain, Scott Jensen will officiate. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5 PM to 8 PM and Friday 1 hr prior to service all at the funeral home. Burial at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont with military honors conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard of V.F.W. Post #854 and American Legion Post #20.
