Bio

Fort Bend Herald, February 2, 2014: Marcella Whatley Poncik was born on May 3, 1927 in Chickasha, OK. She was the sixth child of Laddie and Alma Whatley. She married the love of her life, Jerry Poncik, on Sept. 15, 1948. Shortly thereafter the young couple moved to Fort Bend County and made it their home. Mrs. Poncik was a life long homemaker. She enjoyed cooking and baking, and was quick to share her baked “goodies” with everyone she knew. Marcella greatly loved working in her yard, and could be seen raking leaves and cutting down limbs up until she fell in July. She loved fine clothing and worked at Eidelstein’s Dress Shop in Richmond and Blase Dry goods in Rosenberg. Marcella was a life long Methodist and a long time member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Richmond. Marcella was preceded in death by her parents and five siblings, as well as her husband of 37 years, Jerry Poncik. She is survived by her loving son, Gearld, and his wife, Ann, of Richmond; grandchildren, Josef Poncik, of Richmond, Amy Elliott and husband, Dana, of Katy. She is also survived by the delights of her life, her great-grandchildren, Kyle and Garrett Atkinson of Katy, Hunter Poncik of Richmond; and step-granddaughter, Sara Elliott of College Station. Marcella leaves a special niece, Karen Dvorak, of Oahu, Hawaii, and other nieces and nephews, as well as sister-in-law, Joan Whatley of Daytona, Florida. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Monday, February 3, 2014, in the State Room of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg. Services will be held at St. John’s United Methodist Church of Richmond, with Rev. Eric Ryburn officiating, at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 3, 2014. Interment will follow at West Gethsemane Gardens in Rosenberg, Texas. Pallbearers will be Josef Poncik, Dana Elliott, Irvine Carpenter, Kirk Long, Fred Poncik, and Leonard D’vorak, Jr. The family wishes to thank the staff of Ft. Bend Nursing Center for all they did to help make Marcella’s last months happy and comfortable. The family also requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to St. John’s United Methodist Church, 400 Jackson St., Richmond, TX. Tributes and words of condolence may be left for the Poncik family at www.davisgreenlawnfh.com.
