Jim was the 5th child of Oliver Perry Embree and Lucinda Turnmire. He was born in Daviess Co., MO. While growing up in Missouri, Jim cut down trees, clearing land for fence posts, cord wood and railroad ties. He was also good with horses and mules. According to his sister, Gladys, he attended school through the 3rd grade. He could sign his name but could not read or write beyond that. He signed his name with an "X" on all papers and land deeds. He married Norah Ida Collins Aug 8 1897 in Martinstown, Putnam Co., MO. His grandson wrote this about him: "Granddad Jim was driving his Model T Ford with Grandma Ida and the kids as passengers. Ida told Jim he was driving too fast and he told her he wouldn't shake the hat off her head. He soon turned the car over, dumping eggs all over and pushing Ida's hat right down over her ears. Granddad always laughed when he told this story." Jim and Ida lived not far from the Mt. Hope Church of Christ. Jim sold his acreage and major farm possessions to his father, and moved from the Unionville, Putnam Co., MO area, to Medford, OK. His sale was held on Oct 7, 1915. From Medford, they moved to Garden City, Kansas. Jim and Ida had 3 children: Lyle Elwood, May 1, 1898 Putnam Co., MO - Sept 25, 1961.
