☆~ VETERAN, KOREAN WAR (1950-1953) ~☆ Raymond Douglas "Ray" Dobias was born October 30, 1928, to James and Elsie (Kliment) Dobias in the little farm house 5 1/2 miles north of Atkinson, Nebraska. Ray passed away January 22, 2014. Which his father had built before his marriage to Elsie. Dr. Douglas was the attending physician when Ray was born in the middle of a Nebraska blizzard, so he was given the middle name Douglas in honor of the Doctor. He grew up on this little farm with four brothers and a sister. He spent much of the time helping his mom with housework and caring for the younger children. Only speaking Bohemian when he started to school in district 79, he soon learned English and attended school through the eighth grade across the road from his grandparents' home. He quit school to help his family in the fields. He was mechanically minded and could fix most any type of machinery. This carried over into his adult life. He hired out to neighbors until being inducted into the Marines in 1951. He spent time in Korea, and while there his mother sent him the Atkinson Graphic containing the picture of a neighbor girl, Ruby Meyer, a candidate for a local Hay Days queen. They corresponded as she became the love of his life and they were married in 1955. In 1959 Ray and Ruby bought their present farm from his uncle and it was here they raised their seven children. Numerous teens also spent time with them, including some from Mexico, Japan, and The Nebraska Children's home. In 2011, they received a Nebraska farm family award for 100 years of this land belonging to the Dobias family. An interesting note about five years ago, a native prairie grass, prairie sand reed, which had lain dormant for about fifty years, came up and flourishes in the corner where Grandma Betty had grown it. Ray was an active member of Faith Wesleyan Church, and was always there to support Ruby in her work with the children. He was a quiet, behind the scenes person ready and willing to do what was needed. Many hours were spent on church improvement projects, and in his workshop cutting wood for various craft projects. Ray and Ruby were also Hay Days grand marshals in 2010 and were Mr. & Mrs. Hay in 2012. Ray's interest in planes led him and Calvin to go to Oklahoma and buy a kit for an ultra-light plane, which he put together in his garage, and enjoyed flying when the wind was down. The year hail ruined all our crops, his mom told him to do something he had wanted to do, so they attended the big Oshkosh airshow in Wisconsin. The children sent them on an Alaskan cruise for their fiftieth anniversary, and they also enjoyed a free trip to Disneyland one year. However, Ray was happiest working on the land. The last two years have been bittersweet, as his health deteriorated. He was determined to harvest his corn, which with the help of family, he was able to do.
