Gilbert Lee Packer, 90, of Dallas, Texas passed away on January 13, 2014 from complications arising from a broken hip. He was born October 25, 1923 in Forney, Texas; one of four children born to Martin Seth and Sammie Duncan Packer. Gil is preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Beth, his parents and three brothers, Seth Jr., James T. and Charles Lowe. He is survived by his son Ron and wife Denise; son Greg; grandson Ory and numerous close friends and family members. Gil graduated from Sunset High School and enlisted in the US Navy. He was serving aboard the light cruiser USS Honolulu on the day of the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and continued to bravely serve on that ship throughout the entire war in the Pacific. After the war Gil graduated from North Texas University where he enjoyed fraternity life and where on Valentine's Day, 1947 he had his first date with the girl that was to become his future wife of 60 years and the enduring love of his life, Beth Kinder. Gil and Beth made many close friends while in college, creating a much beloved extended family that lasted the remainder of their lives. Gil enjoyed a long and successful career in the envelope manufacturing business starting with U.S. Envelope in 1951. Always believing it best to do business with friends, Gil enjoyed lasting friendships throughout his professional life, until his retirement in 1994. In addition to being an avid golfer, Gil proudly served in numerous professional and charitable leadership roles. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, January 17, at Restland Cemetery. Published in Dallas Morning News on Jan. 15, 2014
