Bio

George Washington BARNES Given Name: George Washington Surname: Barnes Sex: M Birth: 10 May 1847 Death: 13 Feb 1923 in Alco, AR Stone County Note: Buried in Alco Cemetery, Stone County, Arkansas. He boarded the school teacher for $4.00 a month. He weighed about 150 pounds and was 5'10" tall with brown hair and blue eyes. A mustach and a goatee was his custom . He was good natured and a big talker especially about coon hunting. He farmed and raised corn, sorghum, Irish and sweet potatoes. He received a $50 gold piece for the sale of his father, J.J's place. Only twenty of these coins were ever issued but only three were in circulation at the death of George. One was lost at sea, one was in Great Britian and one was in George Barnes' possession. George had requested that it be used to bury him, so Sam gave it to a hardware man for his father's casket . That $50 gold piece would have been worth $50,000 in 1982. He had a good education and could read and write. See the book on the James Jackson Barnes family for interesting stories.
