Bio

"VERDICT. THE STATE OF NEBRASKA - SAUNDERS COUNTY. At an examination, Holden at near Weston in Saunders County, State of Nebraska, on the 13" day of March, A. D. 1900, by me J. E. Hadley, Coroner of said County, upon the body of Wenzel Hakel, lying dead, by request of the only son of the deceased, I was requested to examine the circumstances relating to the death of Wenzel Hakel whose dead body was found at 5 o'clock p.m. March 12", 1900. The facts follow:- At about 5 o'clock p.m. March 12", 1900, the deceased took his gun to shoot a rabbit which seems to have been [illegible] a longer pile of poles from twenty to thirty feet long. In twenty or thirty minutes the dead body of the man was found, lying on the poles and grasping the distal end of the gun barrel in the right hand. The contents of the load had been discharged, entering the head under lower jaw and passing out at the posterior fontanelle. Everything indicated that while he held the distal end of the gun barrel in the right hand and drawing the gun after him, the hammer of the gun was pulled against one of the poles and thus discharged the load. I inquired of the son if pleasant favorable relations existed between his father and mother and being assumed such was the case, I thought it imprudent to put the county to the expense of an inquest. Respectfully submitted, [signed] J. E. Hadley, Coroner."
