NEW ALBANY – Ella Earl Duke Lesley, 94, passed away Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at Sanctuary Hospice in Tupelo. She was born Oct. 4, 1919, in Union County to Hunter and Nellie Duke. She was a member of Cleveland Street Presbyterian Church in New Albany. In 1958 she married her husband, Herman Lesley Sr., a widower with three boys. She was a crossing guard at Mattie Thompson Elementary School for many years. She is survived by sons, Herman Lesley Jr. of New Albany, John David Lesley of Tupelo and James Larry Lesley (Joanne) of Cotton Plant; three grandsons, Brian Scott Lesley (Emily) of Starkville, James Benjamin Lesley and Matthew Duke Lesley, both of Tupelo; two great-grandsons; and three great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Lesley Sr.; a brother, Woodson Duke; and her parents. Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. today, Jan. 4, at United Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Dan Hazen officiating. Burial will be at New Harmony Cemetery. There will be no graveside service. United Funeral Service of New Albany is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be from 1:30 until 3:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St. Jude's or the charity of the donor's choice.
