Bio

"In the death of John Pfeifer on Tuesday afternoon of this week another of the really early settlers of this part of Platte county was called upon to part this life. The parting was sudden, but peaceful, and inasmuch as his closest friends were not aware that he had been ill, his untimely death was a sorrowing shock to the entire community. On Monday evening Mr. Pfeifer complained of not feeling well, and called on a doctor for medicine. Tuesday morning it was apparent that he was feeling better, and was up and around the house as usual. In the afternoon he was lying on the sofa and like the sudden stopping of the ticking of a clock his heart ceased beating and in a twinkling this good man had passed to that great beyond from whence no soul returns. The deceased was born in Jetzles, Austria, Nov. 20, 1843, and was therefore a few months past 66 years old at the time of his death. In the year 1869, he came to the United States, and along with relatives and other people from the Fatherland, settled in Dane county, Wisconsin. in August 1872, Mr. Pfeifer was united in marriage to Miss Mary Pfeifer and soon after their marriage they came to Platte county and settled on a farm in the St. Mary's neighborhood. They remained in this neighborhood for a number of years and finally moved to the placed northwest of town where they continued to make their home until a couple of years ago when they moved to Humphrey. Besides his wife, the deceased is survived by ten children. They are John, Thomas, Ferdinand, Rochus, Frank, Richard and Mrs. Lambert Heesacker of this place, Frederick of St. Louis, Mo., and Jos. of Cincinatti, Ohio, who are studying for the priesthood and Vincent who is attending school at Teutopolis, Illinois. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. R. Olmer of this place, two brothers in the old country, two brothers at Spalding, this state, and one brother living in Oklahoma. The funeral was held from St. Francis church at nine o'clock this morning and the remains were laid to rest in St. Francis Cemetery."
