Information courtesy of: John Franklin Horrighs. John Peter Schwirtz was born March 14,1838 in Itsic, Luxembourg. He immigrated to the U.S. with his parents Antoine Schwirtz (# 65629578) and Anna Catherine Remakle Schwirtz. John enlisted as 23 yr. old resident of Spring Brook, Jackson Co., Iowa on June 24,1861 at Bellevue, Iowa in Co. I, 5th Iowa Infantry. They traveled down the Mississippi River to Burlington and went into bivouac at Camp Warren in early July 1861. John participated in the Battle of Iuka, Ms., the Battles of Jackson and Champion Hill, Ms. and the assault May 22,1863 on the fortifications at Vicksburg, Ms. He was also at the Battle of Mission Ridge fought near Chattanooga, Tn. on Nov.25,1863. On Jan.1,1864 he re-enlisted, was consolidated Aug.8,1864 and transferred Sept.18,1864 to Co. G, 5th Iowa Cavalry. He was mustered out at Nashville, Tn. on Aug.11,1865. John Married Miss Barbara Hilger (# 36814940) on Nov.30,1865 at St. Nicholas Church, Spruce Creek, Ia. He is found living in Bellevue, Ia. on the 1880 Federal Census as a 41 yr. old teamster with his wife Barbara, age 35 and seven children. He died of sickness in early 1882 at Bellevue as his widow filed for a widow's pension on May 9,1882 and received certificate # 293.474. At the 1887 reunion of the 5th Iowa John is listed as "Died of sickness in 1882". Thank you.
