Pastor Tim Pratt will officiate with burial in the Riverside Cemetery. Melvin, second son of Anton and Albina (Divis) Kotrous was born August 17, 1927 in his grandparents home, which is now the Verdigre Eagle office. He lost his battle with Dementia on May 18, 2010. Melvin grew up on a farm and attended rural school through eighth grade. He had no chance to attend high school because he was needed to help on the farm. Melvin was driving at age 12, thus he loved antique cars, big rigs and his two Dodge Ram pickups. Melvin played baseball, when some teams had no diamond, they used any available meadow. He loved cat fishing at the river and also did some duck hunting. Melvin started working for Yager Brothers Sand and Gravel in 1947. He became the best dragline operator in this territory. Melvin dug the footings for the school gym, elementary building, swimming pool, as well as many homes near and far. When Yager Brothers retired, Melvin and a partner bought the business and renamed it Verdigre Sand and Gravel, which they operated through 1986. Mel then recycled material for Yankton, South Dakota until his health started failing. He was a volunteer fireman for 50 years, serving in offices of president and chief, a town board member for 28 years and served 37 years as treasurer for Verdigre Improvement Club. Melvin would drop everything to help whoever was in need. Melvin and Emma raised six children and is survived by, Ricky Eugene (Cheryl) Kotrous of Lincoln, Marjie Lynn (Merle) Jurgensen of Madison, Callie Kay (Contrell) Wright of Schuyler, Merle Leon (Nancy) Kotrous of Kansas City, MO, Cindy Lee Seger of Beatrice, Lori Dee (Greg) Thoesen of Edgewood, WA; six grandsons, seven granddaughters, fourteen great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his wife, Emma of 64 years; and one brother, Leo Kotrous of Verdigre. He is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Alvin; one grandson, Jeff Dieter; and one daughter in law, Davon Kotrous. He was the worlds greatest fireman, best father and friend, was loved by many, and will be missed by all who knew him. Provided by Find A Grave Member #48685569
