Kate May Merchen, the subject of this sketch, was born on August 27, 1878, in Geneva, Shelby County, Indiana, and was the youngest daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Anna VanMeter. In the spring of 1881, the family moved to Knox County, Nebr., where Mrs. Merchen grew to womanhood and was a successful school teacher. On October 20, 1897, she was united in marriage to Frank Merchen and they resided on a farm near Crofton until the year 1906, when they homesteaded near Quinn, S.D., after proving up there, they moved to Harrison, Nebr., from there to Lynch and returned to Crofton in the fall of 1917. Her husband passed away in May 1922. Mrs. Merchen was a woman of pleasant disposition and by her winning ways was known to her neighbors, friends, and even little children as, " Aunt Kate". For the last eleven months, Mrs. Merchen has been a constant sufferer of the dreaded disease cancer. During the summer she was taken to a hospital at Lynch, Nebr., for treatment and then came home much improved but in December she began to fail and death came quietly at 1:20 on the morning of March 17th, 1927. Mrs. Merchen leaves her aged father, Thomas Van Meter, with whom she has made her home since the death of her husband, one sister Mrs. Minnie Birdsell, of Crofton, and two brothers, George and Roy Van Meter of Quinn, S.D., and a host of friends to mourn her demise. Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home, of Rev. Mr. Webber, of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, northwest of Crofton, who delivered a very appropriate sermon. Benevolent Rebekah Lodge No. 148, of Crofton, of which Mrs. Merchen, was a member, having had charge of the services at the grave. Mr. and Mrs. H.G. West, of Sioux City, and Orrie Birdsell, of Wayne, were out-of-town relatives here for the funeral. Source: The Crofton Journal, Crofton, Nebraska, Thu, Mar 24, 1927
