Prisoner of War - Silver Star Charlie Arrington enlisted in the U.S. Army in November 1942 at Abilene, Texas. In June 1944, he was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division when it spearheaded the airborne assault of Sainte-Mère-Église hours before the seabourne launch of D-Day and the Invasion of Normandy. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry. On September 23, 1944, he was reported missing in action over Holland. His family was notified in December that he was being held as a prisoner of war by the German government. He was released and returned to Quanah for a 60-day furlough in July 1945. Charlie married Edith Scarlet c1936 and they had a son who died in infancy. Shortly after returning from service in WWII, they divorced, and Charlie married Mary Klapper Walkup in December 1945. After her death in March 1971, and the death of Edith’s husband earlier that year, Charlie and Edith reunited and were married in Quanah on November 13, 1971.
