James Raymond Supak, 74, of Bryan, passed away at his home on Thursday, November 14, 2013, surrounded by loved ones. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Monday, November 18, 2013, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, College Station, with Rev. Kurtis Wiedenfeld officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday, November 17, 2013, at the funeral home with a vigil service at 5:30 p.m., under the direction of Hillier Funeral Home. Burial will be in College Station Cemetery following the funeral mass. James was born in Columbus, Texas, to the late John and Valasta Supak. Upon graduating from St. Mary's High School in Taylor, Texas, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1958 to 1961. He attended Texas A&M University from 1962 to 1971 where he earned B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Plant and Soil Science, Soil Chemistry, and Soil Chemistry and Mineralogy, respectively. James joined the Texas Agricultural Extension Service (TAES) in Lubbock, TX as an Extension Agronomist in 1972. He became the Extension Cotton Specialist for the High Plains in 1974 and served in that capacity until he accepted the State In 1994, James was appointed the Associate Department Head and Extension Program Leader for the Soil and Crop Sciences Department at Texas A&M. He received numerous awards, honors, and publications resulting from his work with the cotton industry at the local, state and national levels. He retired from TAES in January 2001, as a respected colleague, mentor and friend to farmers across the state. James spent the next 12 years as a self-employed cotton consultant, associate director for the Office of Texas State Chemist, Professor Emeritus, advisor to the Texas Water Resources Institute, and Senior Scientist on an international cotton production project. He spent the final four years of his career with Texas A&M AgriLife Research where he coordinated programs focused on managing Texas' Pierce's Disease in grape crops and Zebra Chip Disease in potato crops. James retired again in January 2013. In addition to membership in numerous professional organizations, James was an active member of the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church where he served as a fourth degree knight in the Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 39 years, Pat Supak. James is survived by his second wife of four years, Pat Chaffin Supak, of Bryan; son, Wayne Supak and wife, Amy, of Washington, IL; daughters, Karen Walter and Brian, of Dallas, TX, Janet Koslovsky and Randy, of Carrollton, TX, Laura Morgan and Mark, of Waxahachie, TX; grandchildren, Cassandra, Talon, Brandon, Ashlyn, Kimberly, Whitney, Benjamin, Luke, Kate and Amber; brothers, John and Frank Supak; sisters, Marilyn Rapp, Ellen Blank, JoAnne Hromadka, and Elaine Reeves; many other relatives and numerous friends.
