Bio

Borghild Marie Peterson, 90, of La Crosse died Sunday, July 8, 2007, at the Bethany St. Joseph Care Center. She was born Sept. 13, 1916, in rural Coon Valley, Wis., to Henry and Tena (Krokum) Gjefle. She married Harold S. Peterson on Feb. 16, 1935, in Coon Valley. Borghild worked at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in housekeeping for almost 27 years, retiring in 1980. She loved people and was a longtime member of the Southside Senior Citizens Center, where she enjoyed playing cards and bingo with her friends. Borghild also didn't get her driver's license or her own car until she was 50. She was an active and faithful member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. She is survived by four children, Richard (Karen) Peterson, Corrine Abegglen, Jeanette (Darrell) Garner and Vernon Peterson, all of La Crosse; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Winton Blexrud of La Crosse; two sisters, Solveig "Sally" Mathison of Westby, Wis., and Lucille Maxim of Florida; two sisters-in-law, Elmera Gjefle of Coon Valley and Arlene Gjefle of Ontario, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold in 1993; a daughter, Harriet in 1991, a granddaughter, Roxanne Blexrud; four brothers, Oscar, George, Leland and Burton Gjefle; and a sister, Aletha Midtlien; and a son-in-law, James F. Abegglen. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 13, at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church. Pastor Jim Steinbrecher will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the church. Memorials may be given to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. The Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is in charge of arrangements. Borghild enjoyed her time living at Washburn on the Park and the Claddagh House and her family would like to thank the staff at Bethany St. Joseph for their wonderful care.
