Bio

Raymond "Sonny" Whatling, age 75, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Saturday, April 8, 2006 at his residence. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton with Reverend David Wildermuth officiating. Visitation with the family is from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a DVD Tribute Presentation at 7:00 p.m. followed by military honors provided by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791. Honorary pallbearers are members of the BAC Local No. 2. Sonny was born September 29, 1930 at Yankton, South Dakota to James and Lydia (Bucholz) Whatling. He grew up attended school in Yankton. After school, he joined the United States Navy and served from 1947 to 1950. He married Bonnie Jensen on September 28, 1950 in Yankton, South Dakota. After his marriage, he worked at Morgan Manufacturing for a few years before going into the masonry trade. He was an active member in the BAC Local No. 2 for over 40 years. He was also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Sonny enjoyed fishing, hunting, cooking and trying new recipes. Above all, he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Whatling of Yankton; three children: Lonna (Daryl) Miller of Yankton, Kat (Larry "LT") Thranum of Yankton, and Raymond J. Whatling Jr. of Tyndall, South Dakota; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy Sherman of Yankton; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Doris Zonotti and Sylvia Krovaza; and two brothers, Don Novak and James Whatling.
