Bio

With the passage into history of the earlier Minute Man Missile Program and the fading away of the Boeing 747 Program, we say farewell to David Guttormson, who departed this life Monday, Aug. 13, 2018. David took pride in his work as a gauge and quality control inspector for these projects and was awarded “zero defects” certificates for his “eye-for-detail.” David Franklyn Guttormson was born to Leo T. and Lola V. Guttormson on July 7, 1940 at the Sadie Gilmore Rest Home in Austin, Minnesota. Doctor Leck guided his birth so that he could be born on his maternal grandmother, Valeria Van Pelt’s 50th birthday, afterward a shared birthday that was always a great source of enjoyment for her. David was confirmed in his baptism at First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota. He graduated from Blooming Prairie High School where he was a star football player. David met his wife at Waldorf Junior College, in Forest City, Iowa. She giggled as he was instructing two other young ladies in the proper way to launder clothes. Over the bubbles, a spark must have ignited, as she corrected him in the finer points of laundering clothes. He was also a student in the industrial arts program at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. David’s career began with Flour City Architectural Metals, of Forest City, Iowa, which made much of the ornamental iron work for the Will Rogers Hall of Fame Building. David’s eagerness to expand his skills in quality control work allowed his wife and children to live in various states: Minnesota, North Dakota, Colorado, and Washington. David was an avid woodworker and carpenter. He enjoyed gardening, canning and playing cribbage. He overcame a type of dyslexia which made it difficult for him to read. He particularly enjoyed the company of people, and always had a captivating story to tell, ranging from growing-up with his siblings on the family farm in Iowa and then Minnesota, to youthful days of flying with his friend Dwayne Bean, to pleasant anecdotes illustrating the wisdom of common sense. He listened carefully to people’s concerns and tried whenever possible to provide encouragement. He was always very firm in his convictions. He had great faith in Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who has now mercifully delivered him from a tortuous bone/blood cancer. David’s parents and a brother, Richard Charles, have predeceased him. His surviving siblings are: Leola Clarke, Marie Phillipp and Gerry Guttormson. He was the beloved husband of Diana Mae Robson Guttormson, who passed away in 2012. David and Diana were married for nearly 50 years. He was a loving father of Debra (Richard) Dinkelmann and Dana (Suzanne) Guttormson. He was most proud of his grandchildren: Matthew, Kayla, Andy and Ben.
