************************************************************ Richard Charles Flaska, 81, of Friend died Monday, October 2, 2006 at the Friend Manor after a two-year battle with cancer. He was born May 31, 1925 on the family farm southwest of Friend near Milligan to William and Helen (Hynek) Flaska. Richard attended Saline Queen School District 85, continuing to live on the family farm, farming with his Dad, and then on his own. After he was married, making his home in Friend, he was known as a suitcase farmer, living in town, going to the farm every day. Farming, despite its difficulties, was the love of his life. Before his marriage he was converted to the Catholic faith in Wahoo, where he married Sophie Rita Bartek on August 22, 1961 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wahoo. For the past 45 years he has been a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Friend. All his children and their families living within 20 miles of home, allowed seeing the grandchildren often, and attending events in their lives. Family gatherings on holidays and birthdays were enjoyable events in his life. Being married, not at a young age, made the celebrating of wedding anniversaries special. They celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary at the same time his parents celebrated their 50th anniversary. In 1986, they celebrated their 25th anniversary at the Saline Center. Their 35th wedding anniversary was celebrated at Blue River Lodge in 1996, and their 40th wedding anniversary at the Friend American Legion Hall in 2001. In August their 45th wedding anniversary was celebrated at the Friend Manor with the whole family gathered together. He enjoyed gardening, trips to the farm, coffee time in Milligan, transporting kids on early morning newspaper routes and opening up the Green Top Cafe when Ronita worked there. He also enjoyed going hunting, fishing, trapping, attending polka dances, and occasional casino trips. Richard enjoyed collecting toy tractors and advertising caps, and his cat, Grayson. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Sophie; son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Lori Flaska of Friend; daughters and sons-in-law, Ronita and Rick Dewey of Crete, Melanie and Doug Papik, Starlene and Mark Benorden, all of Exeter, Leannette Flaska of Friend; grandchildren, Ryan, Patrick, Derek, and Michael Dewey, Chelsea Flaska, Blake, Spencer, Jaiden, and Kierra Papik, Nathan, Alex and Ashley Benorden; sister-in-law, Eleanor Bartek of Wahoo, and a host of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his mother in 1976, his father in 1989, and his brother, George in 2003. A Mass of Christian Burial was held October 5 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Friend, with Fr. David Bourek officiating, assisted by Fr. Val Bartek of Trenton and Fr. Steven Cooney of Exeter. Dan Lorenz served as lector. Altar gifts and memory gifts were brought to the altar by grandchildren, Michael Dewey, Chelsea Flaska (who was carrying baby Kierra Papik), Ashley Benorden, Spencer Papik, and Jaiden Papik. Accordion-guitar vocal selections were by Sue Underwood and Galen Beck accompanied by Shirley Milton. A special selection was sung by soloist Nicole Ruhl. Interment at St. Joseph Cemetery, Friend was conducted by Fr. Bourek, followed by a musical selection by Sue Underwood. Rosary was at the church on Wednesday.
