The following information comes frm fg#47601076: Thursday. October 28, 1875 Paper: Dubuque Daily Times (Dubuque, Iowa) Page: 2 The death of Capt. Henry M. Patten, who has been well known all along the Mississippi from St. Louis to Davenport and St. Paul, for the last thirty-one years, is announced as having occurred at his home in Montrose, Lee County, on the 25th of September, although the first public ntice of the event has just happened. Captain Patten was born in Newport, Herkimer County, N.Y. February 18, 1817. When a young man he spent a large portion of his time on the lakes, where he acquired considerable knowledge of navigation and business connected with shipping interests. He emigrated to the west in 1844. and settled in Lee County, Iowa, in 1846; was employed in steamboating on the Mississippi River in various capacities since 1847, filling the position of deck hand, mate, pilot and captain; was Captain on the steamer Clara Hine, Metropolitan, Pomeroy, Bill Henderson and Dan Hine; upon the last of which he was employed as captain from the time she came out, in 1866, until 1872. He was reguared as one of the most efficient boatmen employed on the Mississippi Rapids. He had a large circle of friends and acquaintances. He was just and honorable in all business relations. Benevolence and kindness of heart were prominent traits of his character. He leaves a name unsullied, and a memory that will be cherished by all who knew him.
