Philip J. Scanlan was born at Ladd, Illinois on the 8th day of August 1868 and died at his home one-half mile south of Howard on September 8th, 1934 at the age of sixty-six years and one month. He was united in marriage to Julia L. Hurley on the 12th day of June 1901 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church at Ladd, Illinois. To this union seven children were born, Mrs. Edward Bangasser of Sioux Falls, James, Elmer, Francis, Eileen and Ethel Scanlan of Howard and Alice Scanlan of Ladd, Illinois. Besides his beloved wife and family he leaves one sister, Mrs. M. J. Thilen of Howard, two brothers, W. B. Scanlan, also of Howard, T. D. Scanlan of Ogalala, Neb., and five grandchildren. He moved his family to Howard in the spring of 1913 and resided on his farm until the time of his death. The funeral was held from the St. Agatha's Catholic church Tuesday forenoon with Rev. Father Veeser officiating. The Thompson Funeral home was in charge of the burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery. The pall bearers were chosen from among his most highly respected friends consisting of Frank Lawler, Joe Schlim, George Bangasser, John Cross, Jim Hughes and Geo. Adler. Relatives and Friends from other parts were here to attend the funeral were Mrs Frank Schall, Mrs Arthur McCartin, Mrs John Scanlan and son Justin of Pocahontas, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs Will Snell of Columbus, Neb. Mrs M. J. Cahill, St. Edwards Neb.; Mrs Elmer Flaherty and Alice Scanlan of Ladd, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bangasser, Frank and Francis and Miss Catherine Bangasser, Attorney Fyder and John Mahoney all of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Mr. and Mrs H.W. Patterson of Roswell
