ASHLAND – James Leon "Snowball" Swinford, 79, died Oct. 1, 2013, at his home. He was born July 4, 1934, to Col. Lee and Mary Ellen Hopkins Swinford in Benton County. He was a farmer and a Baptist. Services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at McBride Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. David Jordan and Bro. Rosco Watkins officiating. Burial will be in Hopkins Cemetery in Ashland. McBride Funeral Home of Ripley is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include his wife, Opal Hopkins Swinford of Ashland; three daughters, Betty Hopkins Perry (Donnie) of Arlington, Tenn., Glenda Mathis (Arlin) and Ruby Lynn Mullins, both of Ripley; three sons, Donald Hopkins (Jane) of Falkner, Johnny Swinford (Tammy) of Ripley and Lee Earl Swinford (Vickie) of Kossuth; two sisters, Betty Jo Abby of Walnut and Mary Lee Thunderbird of Ashland; two brothers, Willie Swinford (Kathy) of Saulsbury, Tenn. and Alvie Swinford (Dot) of Myrtle; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Pallbearers will be Tyley Barkley, Donnie Perry, Arlin Mathis, Tyler Wolley, Louis Wooley and Justin Wooley. Honorary pallbearer will be Leroy Thornton.
