Bio

Bernadene Ann Fry Mumm was born to Floyd Fry and Mary Wit Fry on December 14, 1929, in Thayer County, Nebraska and passed away on September 18, 2013 at Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler at the age of 83 years, nine months and four days. She was one of two children. She was baptized and confirmed in the Hubbell Methodist church. She was raised on a farm in Republic County, Kansas and attended Loyalty Rural School. She graduated from Chester High School in 1947 and received normal training and taught school for three years at the Loyalty School. She married Meredith "Bud" Mumm on March 14, 1948, in Belleville, Kan. To this union four children were born. Bud and Bernadene lived on a farm east of Chester on Highway 8, just a short distance from Bud's parents. They milked cows, raised cattle, and farmed with Bud's family. In 1957, they moved to a ranch in the Sandhills. She continued to help Bud around the farm; milking cows, mowing and raking hay with a little Case tractor, and helping with the livestock. She also raised chickens, canned vegetables, sewed for her daughters and helped with 4-H projects. She and Bud attended many dances and loved to play cards with their neighbors. In May of 1966, Bud and Bernadene moved to a farm near the Bruning/Alexandria/Belvidere area. She worked in the Hebron Care Home for a few years. In 1979, she and Bud built a new home in Hebron. She began to work as a cook/baker at the Hebron Public Schools for many years. She enjoyed going to her grandchildren's events, especially the sporting ones. She did a lot of embroidering, especially tea towels to give as gifts and sewed each of her grandchildren a set. She and Bud traveled, went to dances and spent evenings playing cards with their friends. Bud and Bernadene celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2008 with family and friends. She was a member of the XX Extension Club, Ladies' Club and the Neighborhood Club. Bernadene moved to the Parkview Nursing Home in Deshler in October, 2010. Bernadene is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Vernetta Ridder; daughter, Marilyn Kay Spatz; grand-daughter, Melissa Hinrichs; brothers-in-law, William Mumm and Red Ridder, sisters-in-law, Iris Adamson and Marge Palmer. She is survived by daughter, Pat (Rex) Hinrichs of Bruning; son, John (Holly) Mumm of Alexandria; daughter, Cindy (Kim) Schoenholz of Bruning; son-in-law, David Spatz of Lincoln and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Ronald (Bonnie) Mumm of Chester; sister-in-law, Verleen Mumm of Chester; brother-in-law, Elmore Palmer of Livingston, Texas and many relatives and friends. Funeral services were held September 21, 2013 at First United Methodist Church, Hebron. Interment was in the Hebron City Cemetery.
