"An Old Settler Gone" Ringgold County, Iowa 1879 - Andrew Jackson McClurg, of Washington township this county died on Saturday morning March 8, 1879. He was taken about a week since with a severe cold on the lungs, and soon fatal symptoms were developed. Everything was done which medical skill and final kindness could do, but still the disease progressed to a fatal end. Mr. McClurg was born August 1 1815, in Blount County, Tennessee. About the year 1830 he moved, in company of many others to Carroll County, Indiana, on the Wabash, in order to get away from the blighting influence of slavery. He remained there until the year 1848, when he came to Monroe County, Iowa. In 1854 he came to this county. He was on the first grand jury, and his name is assoicated with much of the early history of the county. He was a man of most excellent morals, quiet, unoffending and bashful almost to a fault. He seemed to have lived the life of a hidden Christian, having but little confidence in himself and shrinking from all publicity. He leaves five or six children to mourn their loss. He was buried in the Mr. Ayr Cemetery on Sabbath last, at four oclock PM attended mmy many affectionate friends. Bio by: Calcat
