Bio

UPDATE by contributor, Dennis Brandt (47232334) • [email protected] : The son of Nicholas G. & Rachel (Barton) Cooper, he married Mary Jane Truax August 25, 1853, in Fulton County, Pennsylvania, fathering William (b. @1854), John A. (b. @1856), Lovina (b. @1858), James B. (b. 1860). Beulah Ellen (b. 10/03/62), and Joseph T. (b. @1863), Silas Sheridan (b. @1866). In 1860, he was a laborer living with his family in Belfast Township, Fulton County. A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in McConnellsburg, Fulton County, October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Camp McClure in Chambersburg, Franklin County, November 4 as a private with Co. K, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 12, 1863. Jonathan experienced ill luck with wives. Mary died in 1867, and he married Sarah E. Colledge March 3, 1867, fathering George Watson (b. 08/16/69), Elliott Ambrose (b. 08/06/72), Emma E. (b. @1875), and Harvey Colledge (b. 09/20/76). Sarah died February 13, 1890, and he married Anna Matilda Browning, thirty-three years his junior, September 17, 1891, in Bedford County, only to see her die on February 26, 1892. He last married Margaret Ann Mowry, also thirty-three years his junior, September 8, 1898, in Bedford County, but she became the fourth wife to precede him in death. Cause of his death is listed as "chronic Bright's disease of kidneys" with "general anasarca and heart failure" contributing factors. UPDATE by contributor Jerry Miller (47648666): Jonathan had a fourth wife, in between Anna BROWNING & Margaret MOWRY - he married Catharine (HOWSARE) Sowers on 27 SEP 1894 in Chaneysville, Bedford County, PA - she died 11 OCT 1897, less than a year before he married Ms. MOWRY. A copy of their marriage license/certificate is found in the Bedford County records (and in Ancestry.com).
