Bio

There are several Ernst stones in this southwest corner of the cemetery. first row: L-R: double stone for Julia & Peter, then Martha K, and Mathilda. In the background there is a double stone for Velma & Leonard, and just to the left of it (about 2' north) is a stone for Marlene Ernst. The following information came from the National Archives: Velma Pearl (Rater) Ernst was born in Iowa. Her mother's maiden name was Stock. Velma completed 8th grade. On Jan. 9, 1937, Velma married Leonard Ernst, son of Jake and Minnie (Wedemeyer) Ernst. In 1935 Velma lived in Grant township, Guthrie County, Iowa. After they were married, Leonard and Velma farmed in Prussia township, near Adair, Iowa. On the 1940 US Census, Velma reported that she worked 98 hours a week as an unpaid worker. There is a small stone just north of Velma & Leonard's stone for Marlene Ernst. It is possible that this child, born and died in 1941, was their daughter. Social Security records show that Velma got her SSN in California, and that she died in Butte, California. Leonard had passed away in 1982, and she had been widowed eleven years.
