Bettye Jean Philpott, age 82, went home to be with Jesus on August 29, 2013. She was the seventh of eight children born to C.I. and Zelda Frances King near Ralls, Texas, on February 18, 1931. She attended Monahans High School, played volleyball there, and graduated in 1947 at the age of 16. She worked in her parent's laundry and as a telephone operator. She was working as a secretary for Sid Richardson Oil in Monahans when she met Joe David Philpott. He was working in nearby Wickett, Texas for Gulf Oil. Their short courtship included dates going to church. They married in Monahans on April 10, 1953. They were blessed with three children, Mary K, Amy and Barton. Bettye and Joe moved back to his hometown of Cisco, Texas in 1971 where Bettye began her career as a teacher's aide. Before retiring, she had worked in the Cisco Primary, Intermediate, and High Schools helping many students with their reading and math skills. It was her lifelong joy and gift to "teach," always encouraging people to learn. Bettye was a loyal partner when Joe surrendered to God's call to preach at two Cisco-area Southern Baptist Churches. After Joe retired from preaching, they moved to Abilene to live. Their children joyfully and lovingly cared for them until their deaths. Bettye never tired of sharing her faith and how Jesus changed her life. Her trust in Him as her Savior sustained her to the end. Survivors include her three children; one sister, Frances "Sis" Wright of Hobbs, NM; many nieces and nephews; and one "grand-dog," Sassy. Graveside services will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Cisco, Texas, on Sunday Sept. 1, at 3:00 p.m with Pastor Bruce Stovall officiating, directed by Kimbrough Funeral Home. The family would like to thank the dedicated doctors and other staff at Hendrick Medical Center's Collier Unit and Wisteria Place Nursing Home for their compassionate care. If desired, memorials may be made in Bettye's name to the Christian charity of choice or the Cisco Cemetery Association.
