Tomas was born at House #6, Lažišťka, in the Prachatice district of South Bohemia, the son of Josef & Anna (Span) Suchomel. On February 4, 1849, he married Maria Cinadr, daughter of Matej & Veronika (Stanek) Cinadr of Nebahovy #20, in a Prachatice Parish. Czech Archive church records show that they had three children while still living in the Prachatice area: Anna, Albert and Roza. The following information was gleaned from notes made in the New Prague cemetery book, census reports, family obituaries, and the Czech Archives: Tomas emigrated with his family to America about 1852. They settled in Wisconsin for two years, then came to Minnesota to the New Prague area. Exactly what happened to Tomas' first wife, Maria, and daughter, Roza, is unknown as there is no record of their deaths in Bohemia or in the United States. On February 20, 1860, Tomas married Katerina Svoboda (who was 24 years his junior) at St Mark's Catholic Church in Shakopee, MN. They are shown on the 1860 census with Tomas' children, Anna and Albert. There is no record of Maria or Roza at that time so it must be assumed that they had passed, exactly where and when is unknown. Tomas and Katerina went on to have 6 children together; two children died of smallpox in 1872.
