Born in Anderson County Texas to Amos Bethuel Fitzgerald and Martha Jane Moore Published in the Athens Review May 4, 1939 Funeral services were held Wednesday at Rock Church in Anderson county for A.W. Fitzgerald, 76, whose lifeless body was found in his one room cabin on Route 1, Montalba on Tuesday morning. Services were conducted by Rev. Calvin Nelson of Palestine and burial was in the Rock Church cemetery. Justice of the Peace Ira G. Cook of Palestine conducted an inquest and announced that he would hold open his verdict for several days, pending further investigation of the case. It was indicated that a verdict of "accidental death by gunshot wounds" would be brought in. A 12 gauge shotgun was found near the body. Mr. Fitzgerald lived alone at his house which is not far from the home of a brother, A.A. Fitzgerald. He had been ill for a long time and relatives reported to Justice Cook that on many occasions he had fired a gun to attract help when he was ill. The theory was advanced that he was particularly ill and tried to shoot the gun and in his weakness got in the path of missiles. The tragedy occurred some time during Monday night, Justice Cook believed.
