Bio

Suggested edit: The Bonham News Bonham, Texas Tuesday, 10 Feb 1914, Page 2 L. E. Stephenson Dead. It is with the profoundest sorrow that we announce the death of one of Fannin County's most highly esteemed citizens, L. E. Stephenson. "Uncle Bud," as he was called by all who knew him. He had been a resident of this county for more than half a century. Born in Maury County, Tennessee, April 28, 1840, at the age of 10 or 11 years old he moved to this county with his parents, where he had since resided. The deceased leaves a wife and three children and a numberless host of friends to mourn his loss. Death was caused by acute indigestion, being taken on Friday morning, Jan. 23, although not seriously, and as the clock approached the still hour of midnight of the same day death, icyhanded, grasped the pendulum of life and decreed that its earthly pilgrimage was at an end. Although he had been blind for a number of years he bore his affliction with courage and uncomplaining fortitude. Notwithstanding this great affliction he never lost sight of business. He was counsellor and guide for the home. In the early 60's when war clouds began rolling up he responded to the call of the Confederacy and enlisted under the command of Capt. Smith, Ninth Texas Cavalry, Company G, thus placing himself into the service of his country and faithfully performing his duty as a soldier, sharing the glory and fame of a true Southern soldier whose daring deeds of valor and heroism has not nor ever will be surpassed. But when the war was over he surrendered his gun, wrung the hand of his comrade in silence, pulled his faded gray cap over his eyes and started upon his slow and painful journey homeward. But the greatest thing that characterized his life, he was a true and tried soldier of the Cross. When he was about 27 years old he enlisted in the army of the Lord by obeying that Gospel that Paul says is God's power to save. Though he "had trials and tribulations in this life, he never fell." May we all so live as to leave behind us the influence for good that we feel that dear "Uncle Bud" had and that we may all one day meet around the great white throne of God, where there will be no more partins or sad farewells.
