PIONEER RESIDENT OF THIS COUNTY, CAME HERE IN 1856. After an illness of about four years, Willis Robert Dowell, 75 years, 7 months, and 3 days old, passed away at his home, 203 North Bradley Street in this city this (Friday) morning at 6:15 o'clock. He had been critically ill since Thanksgiving night, Thursday, November 24. The deceased was born April 24, 1852 in Lebanon, Tennessee, the son of Francis Dowell and Carolyn Doss Dowell. He was the youngest of three brothers, J.P. Dowell, and Francis Dowell preceeding him to the grave, passing away in this city several years ago. He had no sisters. At the age of 4 years, he moved with his parents to Texas, settling first just north of where the First Methodist Church stands and where the Waddill home is now located. After the first year, they moved to their farm about six miles west of McKinney which has continued in the ownership of the family and is now in their possession. He joined the First Baptist Church in this city during the pastorate of Dr. G.L. Yates and with which church he had been since affiliated. He was a member of the Masonic lodge of this city. The deceased leaves a heart-broken wife and eleven children to mourn his passing as follows: Mrs. J.B. Naylor of Waco, Mrs. Ben Hill of McKinney, Mrs. J.J. Brooks of Dallas, Mrs. Jim Taylor of McKinney, Miss Susan Dowell at home, W.R. Dowell, Jr., of Houston, Frank G. Dowell, Jim F. Dowell, A. Dowell and J. McCarty Dowell of McKinney and J.W. Dowell of Augusta, Georgia. The wife of the deceased was before her marriage Miss Susan Abigail Thomas, daughter of the late Jim Thomas and wife, pioneer residents who lived west of McKinney. She was born in the state of Kentucky, coming with her parents to Texas and to West Collin County when only 8 years of age the year the Civil War broke out.
