Howard L. Kolbo, 94 of Kearney, died on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at Wel-Life Assisted Living in Kearney. Memorial services will be on Monday, October 29, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Kearney. Rev. So Yeong Son will officiate. Burial will be at the Callaway, NE Cemetery on Monday, October 29, 2018 at 4:30 p.m. Horner-Lieske McBride and Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services of Kearney is in charge of arrangements. Howard was born on March 24, 1924 to Charles and Clara (Otto) Kolbo in Callaway, NE. He attended the Callaway Public School and graduated in 1942. He taught school, farmed and joined the United States Army for service in 1945-1946. He trained as a Signal Corps radio operator. After the service he became a Union Pacific agent. He returned home to help during his father’s terminal illness. Later he enrolled at Kearney State Teachers College and graduated with distinction in 1952. He also earned a Master’s Degree at Greeley, CO in 1957. He taught music in Sumner and Eddyville for three years, in Bertrand for two years and for thirty years at Whittier, CA. Howard served as the piano accompanist for an Army Chorus, was the church pianist at Callaway, NE and was also the staff pianist at First Christian Church in Fullerton, CA. He devoted many hours to the Trails and Rails Museum in Kearney. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Kearney, Kiwanis and also the Kearney American Legion Post #52. He retired in 1989 at Arrowhead Village in Kearney. Surviving relatives include his sister, Dorothy Chilvers of Neligh, NE; nieces, Carol Hines of Gibbon, NE, Leslie (Frank) Lambert of Minden, NE and Ruth (Roger) White of Murfreesboro, TN; Nephews, Tom (Diane) Kolbo of Nevada, IA, James (Jocelyn) Chilvers of Wheat Ridge, CO and John (Suzanne) Kolbo of Sioux City, IA; Numerous great nieces and nephews and great, great nieces and nephews. Howard was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenneth Kolbo; brother in law, Robert A. Chilvers
