Julia Ann "Sis" Crum was born in 1834 in TN to Hiram Calvin Crum (1814-1887) and Elizabeth Mary (Hughes) Crum (1818-1857). Her paternal grandparents are Jacob Crum (1776-1815) and Elizabeth "Betsy" (Seapall) Crum (1777-1870). Her maternal grandparents are Jesse John Hughes (1788-1858) (who is possibly full blood Cherokee) and Darcus (Johnson) Hughes (1792-1856). Her siblings were Leonard Calvin (1832-1907), Elias "Bud" Crum (1833-?), Joseph (1840-1909), Sally "Puss" (1840-?), Peter (1844-1913), John C (1846-?), Melissa (1850-?), Jesse Allen (1851-1909) & Hiram Calvin "Rail" (1857-1936). 1850 census shows her living in Tippah, Miss with parents & siblings, Leonard, Elias, Sally, Joseph, Peter, John, Melissa and a male Caroll Rogers (age 20). She was married to James Calvin Hilburn in 1855. 1860 census shows them living in Tippah, Miss. with children, Elias & Margaret. 1870 census shows them living in Tippah, Miss with children Elias, Margaret, Sam, Delsie & Leonard. 1880 census shows Julia widowed and living in Alcorn County, Miss with Elias James, Margaret, Joseph, Delsie, Leonard, Charlie & niece M.A. Hilburn (age 3).
