Eddy's brother, Domingo Benavides, an auto mechanic, was a witness to the murder of Dallas police officer JD Tippit (1924-1963) about 40 minutes after the assassination of President Kennedy. Domingo testified he got a "really good view of the slayer." He said the killer resembled newspaper pictures of Lee Harvey Oswald, but he described the shooter differently, "I remember the back of his head seemed like his hairline went square instead of tapered off . . ." Domingo Benavides reported he was repeatedly threatened by the police who advised him not to talk about what he saw. On February 15, 1965, Domingo's brother, Eddy Benavidez, who resembled him, was fatally shot in the back of the head with a shotgun at a tavern named the Wheel on Second Avenue in Dallas. The case was initially marked "unsolved" but police suspected a 41-year-old male who fled the scene. Benavidez's father-in-law, J. W. Jackson, was not impressed by the investigation. He began his own inquiry. Two weeks later, J.W. Jackson was shot at his home. As the gunman escaped, a police car came around the block but made no attempt to follow the speeding car with the gunman. Radford Lee Hill jr. (1924-1973) was eventually charged with the manslaughter of Eddy Benavidez and served 20 months.
