Bio

Pvt, Co.K, 43rd Tenn.Inf.Regt.- CSA ---------------------------- Barton Bayless lived in Catoosa Co., GA. He traveled a short distance to Ooltewah, TN, to enlist into the Confederate Army. He served in Co. K, 43rd Battalion, TN Mounted Infantry. He was captured at Vicksburg where he was allowed parole on the condition that he sign the Oath of Allegiance and promise not to rejoin the Confederate Army. He promised, signed and returned to GA for a short visit before rejoining his unit in Charlottesville, VA. He was wounded in the shoulder and sent to the Hospital in Charlottesville. He recovered from the wound only to die of a fever. He is buried on the University campus at Charlottesville with his fellow troops who died. Sometime after his death the "Ladies of Charlottesville" advertised in "The Confederate Veteran" for funds to place a monument on the graves. Today that monument can be seen on campus. He died Aug. 21, 1864 and was preceded in death by his young wife Mary. Barton and Mary left behind three young children who were raised by family members. A sad story that is much too common in time of war. Mary M. (Reed) Bayless is buried in the yard at Salem Baptist Church, Catoosa Co., GA. She lies next to Bart's brother Anderson R. Bayless who also served in the Confederate Army but survived the war. Barton's War Record, and many others for several wars from the American Revolution on, can be seen at Fold3.com. War records, images and other documents are presented at Fold3 in cooperation with the National Archives.
