Bio

BOUNDS, DR. MURPHY S BOUNDS, DR. MURPHY, Son of John W. Bounds, M.D. and Vallie Blassingame Bounds. His ancestors came to Virginia in the 1660s. The Bounds family was located in North Collin county in the 1840s and his maternal great grandfather (Dr. A.A. Cartwright) a physician and minister, was a member of Peters Colony that settled in Grayson County, when Texas was a Republic. After graduating from Gunter High School, he received a BS Degree from University of Texas at Austin in 1931, and received a MD Degree from University of Texas Medical School at Galveston, in 1935. He had a one year rotating internship at St. Paul Hospital in Dallas followed by a surgical residency. Following his residency he became associated with the Samuell Clinic doing General Surgery for the next 25 years. This was interrupted in 1942 by World War II, his tour of duty lasting until January 1946. He entered the Medical Corp. of the United States Army as 1st Lieutenant and remained in the country until he was sent to the European Theater of Operation and was Chief of Surgery for the 81st Field Hospital of the 7th Army. He was stationed in England and after the invasion of the continent, his hospital unit was sent to France, Germany and Bavaria. His service record indicates that the campaign with which his unit was involved included the Rhineland and Central Europe at which time he received two Bronze Service Stars. After the Germans surrendered, the 81st Field Hospital was enroute to the Pacific Theater of Operations in August 1945. When the Japanese surrendered, the 81st Field Hospital was rerouted to the United States and Dr. Bounds was discharged as Major from the United States Army Medical Corp in 1946. It was at this time that Dr. Bounds married his true love Mary Elizabeth Stonich from Ely, Minnesota, who was a Nurse Anesthetist whom he met and worked closely with during the War. They returned to Dallas and he continued his association with Samuell Clinic until January 1964, at which time he carried on the practice of General Surgery as a solo Physician until his retirement in January 1972. Since his retirement from Medicine he has operated extensive farming and ranching interest in Grayson County. Dr. Bounds raised Beef Cattle and Quarter Horses for many years and held memberships in Dallas County Medical Society, Texas Medical Society, AMA, Texas Associates of Physicians in Nuclear Medicine, Southern Medical Association, Fellow of American College of Surgeons, American Society of Abdominal Surgeons, Fellow of International College of Surgeons, American Quarter Horse Association and Texas and Southwest Cattlemans Association. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Elizabeth Bounds of Gunter, TX; nephews, Garry Bounds and wife Peggy of Dallas, and John Scott Rogers of Gunter; and several great nieces and nephews.
