Bio

Leona Sealey, 100, of South Sioux City, NE, formerly of Vermillion resident, passed away Monday, June 21, 2010 at Regency Square Care Center in South Sioux City, NE. Leona was born April 26, 1910 to her parents, Charles H. and Sadie (Coverdale) Doane. She went to grade school in Clay County and to the University High School for 2 years and Vermillion High School for 2 years, and graduated in 1928. She married Cecil Sealey on October 18, 1928 and moved to the Sealey Homestead farm south of Vermillion. They farmed there for several years. A daughter (Elinore) was born to them. She worked at the Vermillion Community Hospital for 4 years. She has been a member of the Degree of Honor Association for over 70 years. She was juvenile director of Degree of Honor for 4 years. She also was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary while living in Vermillion and served in several offices in that organization. In 1945, she moved with her husband to Wagner, SD, where he worked as an Engineer Technician with the Soil Conservation and lived there for 27 years. While there, she worked at the Wagner Community Hospital for 10 years. Her husband, Cecil passed away October 21, 1968. In 1969, she moved to South Sioux City, NE. She married Fred Sealy in 1975 and lived in Vermillion, SD. She belonged to the Rebekah Lodge, LAPM, LEA branches of the Independent Order of I.O.O.F. lodge and held many offices in the Lodges. In 1983 and 1984, she was Grand Matriarch of Ladies Encampment of South Dakota. Fred Sealey passed away in 1988. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Vermillion. She has spent most of her life caring for other people. Suvivors are her daughter, Elinore Bobier, of South Sioux City, NE, two stepsons, John Sealey of Vermillion, SD and George Sealey of Hot Springs, SD three grandsons, two granddaughters, 12 great grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, 15 step great-grandchildren, and 26 step great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Preceded her in death, her parents, sister, Evelyn Stephens, brother in law, two husbands, son-in-law Cecil Bobier,step-mother, step-son, Harold Sealey, two nieces and a step granddaughter. Burial will be in Bluff View Cemetery, Vermillion, SD. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Thursday, June 24, 2010 in Vermillion.
