Bio

Orville "Shorty" Avery died Friday, June 28, 2013 at Countryside Home, Madison, Nebraska. Shorty was born October 10, 1923 at Petersburg, Nebraska, the son of Charles E. and Ruby N. (Metz) Avery. Shorty attended school in Petersburg, Nebraska and then served in the US Army from January 15, 1945 until November 16, 1946 serving in Japan and the Philippines. Shorty then worked for General Electric in Lincoln, Nebraska until November 1947 and returned to the farm after the passing of his father. Shorty married Viola Patzel on February 22, 1948 in Columbus, Nebraska and the couple continued to farm until moving to Oakdale, Nebraska and then to Newman Grove, Nebraska where he worked for a filling station. They moved to Norfolk, Nebraska where he worked for Home Health Care from 1982 until 1986. He then retired and moved to Madison, Nebraska in 1989 where he worked as a Jury Bailer for the Madison (NE.) County Court. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, a lifetime member of VFW Post 1644 of Norfolk, and a past member of the American Legion Post 35 of Madison, Nebraska. Shorty was inducted into the Nebraska Music Hall of Fame on July 31, 2009 at the De Vent Center during the Nebraska Rocks Weekend. Shorty played music by himself or with a band for 50 years. He started playing with some guys getting together in the fall of 1948. "Shorty and the Swingsters" played in the 60s. The band had a rhythm guitar, lead guitar, piano, and drums that played together for about 12 years. He was one of the last acts to play at the Kings ballroom and retired from playing around the year 2000. In the mid 60's he had a television show on KCNA TV in Albion on Sunday afternoons. Shorty is survived by: wife Viola "Ole" Avery of Madison, Nebraska; children and spouses, Pam and Fred Nathan of Madison, Nebraska, Terry and Jackie Avery, of Charleston Tennessee and Randy and Jackie Avery of Norfolk, Nebraska; brother, Jerry Avery of Seattle, Washington; sisters, Pat Lawrence of Phoenix, Arizona and Neoma Howell of California; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and a host of family and friends. Shorty was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters. Burial was in the Hope Cemetery, Newman Grove, Nebraska with military rights by American Legion Post 35 and the Nebraska National Guard Honor Guard.
