Elijah was the son of Jason Kemp and Hannah Meers. He was a carpenter/joiner and trader. He served as a private in the Massachusetts and New Hampshire militias during the Revolutionary War, 1779-1780. He married Sarah Stewart on 11 Oct. 1785 in Hillsboro, Hillsboro Co., NH. Elijah and his family were living in Springfield, Windsor Co., Vermont, in 1790. They arrived in St. Armand, Missisquoi Co., Quebec, 4 July 1799.
