Roy Hochstetler, 81, of Cairo died Thursday, June 13, 2013, at Wedgewood Care Center. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Cairo, with the Rev. Melanie Adams officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at Cairo. Visitation hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the church. Roy Hochstetler was born April 28, 1932, in Wood River to Ezra and Sadie (Roth) Hochstetler. Mr. Hochstetler married Doris VanWinkle on May 8, 1955, in Cairo. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife of 58 years; a son, Frank Hochstetler of Cairo; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Bob Lamb of Lincoln; a brother-in-law, Leo Kroll of Grand Island; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Edward and Judy Van Winkle of Cairo; and two sisters-in-law, Janice Hochstetler of Dannebrog and Ardis Hochstetler of Crete. Additional survivors include three granddaughters, Katie and Dylan Lamb of Lincoln and Jamie Harvey of Grand Island; and many nieces and nephews. He grew up in the Wood River/Cairo area where he received his education. He entered the United States Army Sept. 3, 1952, and served until Sept. 2, 1954, when he received his honorable discharge. Roy and his wife resided in Cairo, where he built many homes and basements, and in 1958 he entered the plumbing business. In 1967 he became the owner of Cairo Plumbing. In 1970 he began a farming and ranching operation he ran until he retired in 2011. He was a member of Cairo United Methodist Church. He enjoyed drinking coffee and playing cards with his lifelong friends. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, farming and raising cattle. Roy and Doris enjoyed dining out every Saturday night for many years. His greatest joy was his granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary Asher and Doris Kroll; and two brothers, Donald, Maynard and Lester Hochstetler.
