SULLIVAN American Legion and Masonic Services for First Mayes County Boy to Fall in World War – Held Sunday Old Glory, floating at half mast from Pryor’s flagpole, paid honor to the memory of Grover A. Sullivan, a Pryor boy who died in the service of his country during the World War. The body of Grover A. Sullivan arrived Thursday of last week and was delivered to Riley Sullivan, the father. Arrangements were then made for a military burial conducted by the local post of the American Legion, and also for a Masonic service. A huge crowd of townspeople and people from all parts of the county, assembled Sunday afternoon at the Sullivan home, where a short service was held, conducted by Chaplain A.R. Luten, of the American Legion post. Several sons were sung by a double mixed quartette, and Rev. Luton read the 23rd Psalm. While a quartette of ex-service men sang, the casket was slowly borne to the hearse between lines of uniformed men and followed by the Masons, the body was taken to the Fairview cemetery. Before the Masonic burial service began an airplane flew low over the cemetery and garlands of flowers were dropped near the grave. The impressive Masonic service was gone through with, following which the Legion firing squad took its place south of the grave and fired the usual military salute. Sounding of “taps” closed this solemn service. Grover A. Sullivan died July 18, 1918, at Soissons, France, from wounds received in the battle of that name. He had enlisted at Montebello, California, October 1917 as a volunteer. He went first to Camp Lewis, Washington, and from there directly overseas, where he served in Co. L, 28th Infantry. He was, at the time of his death, aged 25 years, 4 months and 13 days. Contributor: Emily Jordan (47063153) • [email protected] st soldier from Mayes County KIA
