Longtime educator Sister Mary Damian Ordener, a nun of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament of Corpus Christi, died Saturday after a long illness. She was 83. She was well-known for her commitment to education and to prayer, said Sister Michelle Marie, superior general of the order and one of Sister Ordener's students while attending elementary school in Vattman. "She was wonderful. She was always dreaming up ways for us to try a new thing or work on a little more difficult project," recalled Sister Michelle Marie. "We had four grades in the same school and she had to be very talented to keep us all going." Sister Ordener, who was a nun for 63 years, taught in parochial and Incarnate Word schools throughout South Texas, including Corpus Christi, Beeville, Sinton, Kingsville and Brownsville. She was principal at several elementary schools, including Corpus Christi's Cathedral School, Sacred Heart, St. Theresa's and St. Patrick's. Most recently, she was managing the bookstore at Incarnate Word Academy in Corpus Christi and serving as math tutor for students. There, she was in demand for her listening skills, her interest in people and her prayerfulness, said Sister Michelle Marie. "She always had time to sit down and talk to people, to find out about the interests in their lives . ., She was everybody's source of prayer," said Sister Michelle Marie. "Teachers and students alike were always at the bookstore those last years, just to talk things over with her and ask for her prayers." In a Caller-Times interview in May 1992, Sister Ordener said she didn't believe in being idle. "When I help someone, I feel I've done something for God," she said. "If I'm ever no longer able to work, I'll keep praying for others, especially all the students I've taught." Sister Ordener also taught catechism classes in Mission, Taft, Corpus Christi, and most recently at Corpus Christi Cathedral, where she served as eucharistic minister. Within her religious congregation, she was on the General Council of Sisters of the Incarnate Word, a delegate to the General Chapter, chairwoman of the Health Commission and was a sacristan and eucharistic minister at Incarnate Word Convent. Sister Ordener is survived by her sister, Noma Lee Lynch of Chalfort, Pa.; and a brother, Benjamin J. Ordener of Corpus Christi. Visitation is at Incarnate Word Convent Chapel from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, followed by a wake service at 7 p.m. today. Visitation will continue at 7 a.m. Tuesday until the funeral Mass at 3 p.m. in the chapel. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. --Corpus Christi Caller-Times (TX); Dec. 13, 1993
