John's brother Isaac, a school teacher who was crippled, was killed by Clear Fork Rangers. Their father Michael was killed by the Rangers while attending Isaac's funeral. An uncle was also killed by the Rangers. John moved his family to Peru IL during the conflict to escape the brutality of neighbors turned bushwackers.
