MRS. SUSANNAH BURNETT After several years of failing health, followed by five weeks of confinement to her bed, Mrs. Susannah Burnett, wife of Mr. John Burnett, died at their home, four miles west of Lamoni, on Wednesday, November 6, 1918. Her age was 71 years and 21 days. She was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, October 15, 1847. Her maiden name was McKee and she came with her parents to Decatur county, Iowa, in 1858, when all this region was very new, few settlers, and houses far apart. On January 2, 1813, John Burnett and Susannah McKee were united in marriage nearly forty-six years ago. Two children were born to them. Alva died in infancy but Elma lived to womanhood and died March 22, 1901. Her going was a great shock to Mrs. Burnett, more than she could endure. But when their own mother was disabled she took five of her brother John's young children to rear and care for. She was a mother to them and they filled her heart and mind largely. These were William, Vern, Zelma, Elma, and Eunice McKee. They were favored in having such loving care and faithful rearing to manhood and womanhood. Four of these and their father were present at Mrs. Burnett's funeral. Other relatives and many old friends came in sympathy for Mr. Burnett and the sorrowing family. Funeral service was held at the residence on Friday afternoon, November 8, sermon by Henry A. Stebbins. The Lamoni Chronicle, Lamoni, Iowa on Thurs., November 14th, 1918, p. 2
