Odile was born and raised on Evergreen Plantation in Wallace, Louisiana. She was one of 10 siblings of 7 sisters and 3 brothers. She survived all of her brothers and sisters. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, James H. (Jimmy) Vaello, originally of Benavides, TX. After high school, Odile entered Nursing School at Mercy Hospital in New Orleans, La. where she graduated first in her class in Feb. 1939. She was named "Florence Nightingale" by the members of her graduating class. She married her loving husband two weeks after graduating from nursing school and they moved to Benavides, Texas, where they lived for over 27 years. While in Benavides, Odile was a member of Santa Rosa de Lima Church and participated in various capacities in the Rosary Society, Alter Society and held various positions in the PTA. Odile and Jimmy moved to McAllen, TX in 1966, where Odile resumed her nursing career at several of the local nursing homes in the McAllen area. She was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in McAllen, where she served as president of the Legion of Mary for many years, as a member of the Alter Society, Catholic Daughters of America and where she served as a long-time Eucharistic Minister. She was also a Life Member of Rio Grande Regional Volunteer Hospital Auxiliary. "Mamo", as everyone called her, loved to play cards and work crossword puzzles. From canasta to bridge, she taught her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren the joys of card games. She also enjoyed reading stories to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and allowed them to polish her nails, comb her hair and enjoyed having them perform small song and dance productions for her and enjoyed hearing about their daily school activities. Mamo was a very loving person that was dearly loved by her family and everyone that knew her. Odile is survived by her three sons: James H. Vaello, Jr. (Shirley), Gerard F. Vaello (Chayo) and Donald B. Vaello (Susie). Also by her eight grandchildren: Maribeth (Dan) Hill, Eric (Red) Vaello, Stacy (Kelly)Madden, Jerri-Lynn (Dante) Mata, Lisa Keller, James (Kathryn) Vaello, Samantha (Andy) Rodriguez and Ben (Julie) Vaello. Also by her fifteen great-grandchildren: Grant, Taylor and Kylie Hill, Paxton and Cole Vaello, Mollie Keller, Lance and Kelly-Marie Madden, Emily and Madeline Rodriguez, Thomas and Luke Vaello, Skylar Hernandez and Sienna and Samara Mata. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at the Garza Funeral Home in San Diego, Texas with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. that evening. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at Santa Rosa De Lima Catholic Church in Benavides, Texas. Interment will follow at the Benavides Cemetery in Benavides, Texas.
