ORD — Eldon Bruha, 91, of Ord died Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, at the Grand Island Veterans Home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Ord Memorial Chapel, with Pastor Jay Powell officiating. Burial will be in the Ord Bohemian Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Ord VFW Post 7029 and American Legion Post 38. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mr. Bruha was born March 19, 1922, on the family farm south of Burwell to John and Frances (Mach) Bruha. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Lucille of Ord; a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Penny Bruha of Ord; two daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia and Bob Backowies of Mead, Colo., and Shirley Knapp of Ord and her fiance, Larry Skarka, of Grand Island; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Minnie Lebruska of Kimball and Hattie Skala of Cozad. Eldon was raised on the farm and attended Kamensky District 49 School. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was in the 381st Infantry, 96th Division from October 1942 until August 1945. He received a Purple Heart after being wounded in the Battle on Leyte Island. After the service he returned to the family farm. On April 10, 1951, Eldon was united in marriage to Lucille Nevrivy at Ord. The couple resided and farmed on Eldon’s family farm for most of their married life. In 1985, they retired and moved into Ord. Eldon was a member of the VFW Post 7029, DAV, and ZCBJ Dennice 14 WFLA Lodge. He enjoyed playing the button accordion, listening to polka music, playing cards and fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Emanuel, William and Edward Bruha; and two sisters, Agnes Bruha and Emma Bilka.
