Published in the Ord Quiz, Ord, Nebraska, Thursday, March 19, 1970, Sect 2, Page 1, Col 6, 7 REA Employee Dies in Freak Pole Accident The first fatal accident in the 22 year history of the local REA district claimed the life of a 23 year old Ord man Thursday morning. Charles (Chuck) Hrebec, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oldrich Hrebec, was killed when a power pole he was working on broke and fell to the ground, pinning him beneath a transformer. Hrebec was to have been married to Linda Pokorny on April 12. Wilbert Calvin, manager of the Loup Valleys Rural Public Power District, said Wednesday that specialists are examining the pole in an attempt to determine why it broke. As yet there has been no report, he said. “We will be unable to answer that question until the investigation is completed,” he said. The pole broke four inches below the ground surface. Another man, Charles (Chuck) Ackles, injured his back when he tried to life the 400 pound transformer off Hrebec. His is still confined to the Valley County Hospital. Calvin said that Hrebec was about three-fourths way up the pole, below the transformer, when it broke. He had been there about 10 minutes changing secondary lines to the Steve Eurek farm. The accident scene was in Sherman county east of the Sherman Dam. (At this point in the article, further information is given about the accident) Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 pm in the United Methodist Church of Ord. Burial followed in the Ord Bohemian Cemetery with concluding rites conducted by Company C of the Broken Bow National Guard, of which Hrebec was a member at the time of his death. Hrebec was born Aug. 14, 1946, at Ord. He had lived his entire life in Valley County, receiving his early education in a rural school and his secondary schooling at Ord. He graduated from Ord High in 1964. Hrebec was the second member of that class to die violently. Don Geweke was killed in November, 1968, when the automobile he was driving was struck by another just south of North Loup. Survivors include his parents; three sisters, Mrs. Marilyn Conner of Burwell, Mrs. Shirley McCain of Bartlett, and Mrs. JoAnne Kasselder of Kearney; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Hrebec of Ord and a host of other relatives
