CAIRO -- Roland Errol Stange, 72, of Cairo died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1998, at St. Francis Skilled Care Unit. Services will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Apfel Funeral Home in Cairo. The Rev. Alan Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cem in Cairo. There will be no visitation. He was cremated. Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Hospice or the United Methodist Church in Cairo. Mr. Stange was born on Sept. 28, 1925, in Grand Island to Harry and Pearl (Hiddelson) Stange. He grew up on a farm two miles east of Cairo and lived there until his death. He attended Cairo High School, graduating in 1943. He became an accomplished pianist, playing in area dance bands. He helped run the Cairo Theater with his brother and assisted part time at Apfel Funeral Home. At age 18, he start caring for his mother, who became bedridden. He later became a Red Cross instructor, teaching emergency medical aid. He also tuned pianos and helped his invalid mother with her floral service by delivering bouquets and arrangements. He farmed for 55 years until he retired, later caring for his father when he became bedridden. After his parents' deaths in the 1970s, he worked at Leon Plastics in Alda for a couple of years. He enjoyed sending cards and corresponding with relatives and friends -- a tradition started by his parents. Survivors include one brother, Gerald of Moorhead, Minn.; and two special caregivers, Delmar and Caroline Eggers of Cairo
