Bio

Bernice C. West, who turned 100 on August 3, of Galion, died Friday, January 21, 2011 at Mill Creek Nursing and Rehab, Galion. Bernice was born in Galion on August 3, 1910 to the late Oscar W. and Etta J. (Rife) Schnegelsberger. She married Grant H. West on December 24, 1930 and had 61 years of marriage with him until his death on May 23, 1992. A lifelong Galion resident, her church and her community were her life. She was a member of the former St. Mark's United Methodist Church for many, many years. She was church organist there for 35 years, she sold over 600 brooms as part of a church project, and worked the church's sauerkraut suppers for 81 years. She volunteered 2937 hours of service to the Galion Community Hospital. She crocheted nearly 400 hats for newborn babies. Currently she is a member of Christ United Methodist Church and the Ruth Circle of the church. She has been a member of the Current News Club, Galion Hospital Aux. the Merry Hearts Club, the former Timely Topics Club and the former Market Street Methodist Church, which was located on the south west corner of Market St. and Atwood St. in Galion. She was member of the Order of the Eastern Star for many years, holding membership in Chapter #3, Bucyrus, and for many years in the former Naomi Chapter #47, Galion. She loved to sew and bake cookies. She is survived by: her two daughters Phyllis Goorley, Galion, Mary Jane and Val Young Caledonia, her six grandchildren: Marcia and Rich Marion, Murphy, TX, Mark and Faythe Goorley, Glen Ellyn , IL, Stephen and Cynthia Goorley, Wayne IL, Stephanie and Dwight Peoples, Galion, Valery and Jeff Johnson, Prospect, Eric and Kathy Young, Galion, 7 great grandchildren, 3 step great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren and 3 step great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her two brothers Herbert and Willard Schnegelsberger and her sister Mary Rizor and her son-in-law Richard Goorley. Friends may call Sunday from 2:00-5:00 PM at the Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home, Galion. An Eastern Star Service will be held at the funeral home at 5:00 P.M. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, January 24, 2011 at the Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home, Galion, with Rev. Don Trigg officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Galion.
